There are several ways to get on base. Types include hits full swing, bunt, drag bunt, slap and hit. A batter can get on base with a walk, or when struck by a field, but these situations are not hits. Riders can not leave their bases after the pitcher releases the ball.

The two teams switch between offense and defense after the defensive team makes three deaths. Outs can be done in several ways. A defensive player (a fielder) can catch a batted ball before it touches the ground, making a withdrawal. A fielder can also hold the ball touching a base, when an offensive player (here, a base runner) is forced to advance before the runner reaches that base. If the rider is not obliged to advance the runner must be tagged with the ball to be called. A launcher "hits" to the dough, resulting in a withdrawal.

A blocked is when the pitcher throws three blows to the dough. A strike is given when there is a good location, the batter does not strike when the batter swings at the ball and it misses or errors when the dough ball (even if a foul ball can not be strike three Unless bunted). The batter is also given four balls. A ball is not bad. If the batter gets four balls, the batter is awarded first base. This is known as a walk. Locations of good and bad are determined by the strikezone. The strike zone is a rectangular region that spans the width of homeplate and duration runs from the knees of the batter just below the shoulders.

Softball has a number of innings, usually seven or nine. A round is a series of two teams playing offense and defense. At the end of the serial number of rounds the team with the highest score wins.

Softball is a direct descendant of baseball, which is sometimes called to distinguish Hardball softball, but differs in several respects (see comparison of baseball and softball). This article assumes no knowledge of baseball.

The International Softball Federation holds world championships, held every four years, in several categories. The ISF is the international governing body. The Amateur Softball Association is the national organization of directors of softball for the United States under the 1976 Amateur Sports Act. Due to the popularity of this sport, there are a multitude of organs such as the United States Specialty Sports Association and the National Softball Association.

Fast Pitch Softball is a very defensive game, pitcher-oriented. The pitcher has the ball at maximum speed with little or no arc. The terrain is very similar to one thrown by a baseball pitcher, but the two differ primarily in their launch mode and exit points: the most baseball pitchers release the ball from one point higher than the glove Receiver (above), while the softball fastball pitchers release point that is less than or equal to the height of the catcher's glove (underhand). Speeds of 70 + mph (110 + km / h) are common at the careers of women. Because of the increased difficulty of hitting the bigger, less dense ball, fast softball games are typically played on fields much smaller than their counterparts in slo (typically 200 feet [61 meters] of marble at the close center field).
Modified Pitch Softball balance between fast and slow pitch. The speed of the locations are limited by not allowing the pitcher to raise their arms above their shoulders.
Slow Pitch softball gives batters more dominance by making it easier for them to hit the ball. The type of ball for women and youth competition is usually smaller and denser than that of the variety fastball, which makes a ball hit hardest on defense. This type of ball is often referred to as a "Green Dot", due to the green dot on the ball that marks its size range. Men's slow pitch ball type is.
