Projects Abroad Volunteers Join Senegal awareness Mars AIDS day The beginning of December saw aid projects abroad Senegal to coordinate an AIDS awareness day with our local partner in the SFA Pikine neighborhood of St. Louis.
Friday, December 1st, otherwise known as the World Day of AIDS Awareness, Projects Abroad staff and volunteers took to the streets of Pikine with its local partner, Action Women Children - AFE for AIDS Awareness March. Desk Officer - Kristina Fitzpatrick tells of the day:
"It was by all means an early start - 7am! We met in Sor distributing T-shirts and see the artistic results of volunteers who created a Projects Abroad banner for the month of March. After a long walk across the sand at the center of the SFA, we set our course, and also met with some of our famous "artist" friends, who were to provide music and entertainment for the month of March!
After the road had been completely resolved - which obviously took some time, bearing in mind that we are on track in Senegal, we started very gently and slowly at first, in the dusty streets and tiny Pikine. Pikine is the poorest residential area of St. Louis, with a population of around 70,000 people, nearly one third of the total number of people living in St. Louis, a truly amazing amount, and therefore a very important area to increase awareness about AIDS and HIV.
Our T-shirts, banners and music soon to attract a large crowd, and when we reached the sight at a specific time of the road, there were at least 150 local people who follow us, and more All projects overseas representatives and staff of the SFA.
What was brilliant about it was the opportunity to distribute pamphlets created by the overseas projects on AIDS and HIV - with information such as whether the virus is, its presence in Senegal, how it can be applied, preventive measures, etc., as well as an invitation to have a free HIV test during the day.
At this stage of the Mars was big and noisy as we had expected, with police escorts who accompanied us to a local medical center where the queue began to free HIV testing.
It was, overall, a brilliant morning achieved everything she needed to do - increase the visibility of AIDS and HIV at the local level, to provide free HIV testing for local people, and a small of the day AIDS awareness worldwide. A big thank you and bravo to all the volunteers who participated!
