MarketplacePalatal Expansion What to expect with palatal expansion prior to bone grafting an office for a 6 year old child born with a cleft palate? ? My 6 year old daughter was born with a cleft palate and lip. Now she is supposed to begin maxillary expansion, it has a Class III malocclusion (whatever that means). They say it may take 3-4 weeks to palatal expansion. My daughter is very nervous and now I am also concerned about how it will Iam. What can we expect? Will it be painful for her? Extending a palace on a child (especially with a slot) is not painful - the bone is not fused (fuses usually around 13 years or so) with a slot in the fistula (hole in palate) could get a little bigger. It may have some trouble drinking liquids (just drink more slowly). They are widening the mouth for more space and create more of an arc (think of a U instead of V) The most it will need is Children's Advil (like a very soft, dull headache - really not bad). It may be a bit tricky to grow, but make sure you know what you are doing when they show you before leaving the doctor's office. I was very uncertain parents always get the hang of it. It's like a key fitting into a slot and turning back. It's kind of exciting, you will see a change in his mouth in a very short time. Well she is really scared and does not want them to, you can try to give the gas and bedding to say and pass it with it and you will not see them all scary things and you will not feel any cuts or cutting it stirs painful, but it costs money to sleep you know that gas is a difficult thing to go throw, but try to make it more comfortable as possible.
