Emergency ElderlyMedical Alert Systems: Better to deal with emergencies as cell phones

In the case of an emergency assistance is required, the elderly or disabled people need a way to communicate with others, and a medical alert system (also known as medipendant) is a device that allows them to do so. While using a cellphone to call 911 may seem like an acceptable option, it is far from perfect, and a medical alert is useful, reliable and timely.

The first advantage that these devices have more cell phones is their convenience. They can be worn on the wrist like a watch, or hung around the neck or be a better place than in a pocket, which can easily become inaccessible if someone fell awkwardly. They are lightweight and compact, even more than the smallest cell phones. Battery life is another point on which a medical alert system is superior to a cell phone. Once fully charged up, a cell phone can be used for about two days, but much less than if many calls are being made about it. The life of the battery for a medical alert system? One year. Yes, they last for a full year before needing to be recharged.

Robustness is another factor to consider. Removing a cell phone of the same height of the belt can lead to become totally unusable, while a medical alert system could be abandoned, for example, on the stairs without damage to it. They are also waterproof, so take a shower or bath is not a problem whatsoever. The phone buttons cell size is also a problem because they are extremely low, which means that those who have poor eyesight or hands unstable, may have real difficulty in pressing the right. Compare that to a medical alert, just one big, easy to press the button to be pressed once for a direct line of communication open with a specialist in health care.

By pressing the button, the user need not wait to talk to someone, the call will be answered in seconds. There will not rush to the call, and much time can be spent explaining that the situation is necessary. It is literally like having a professional specializing in medicine, which is also a friend on hand 24 hours a day. Then there is too much flexibility to consider. By calling 911 from a cell phone, an elderly or disabled person will be, most of the time, sent an ambulance to them, if they really need it or not, as is normal procedure for people with risk. There are more opportunities with a medical alert system, such as having sent a doctor instead of an ambulance, an appointment of nurses during the day, or just a friend or relative of be contacted.

So if you are elderly yourself or you have an old friend or a parent whose welfare is a concern, you should definitely consider buying a medical alert system.
