The main advantages are that they keep the thigh muscles warm to prevent muscle fatigue, irritation and rashes, and wick sweat from the body. In addition, there is evidence that the compression shorts can improve athletic performance. They can also be used as a way to keep the male genitals in place the same way memories do.

More recently, JockStraps fell out of favor with young athletes, and clothing such as shorts have increased in popularity, probably because of their similar function and less like a nuisance.
