Ceiling Fan Brace

I want to install a ceiling fan, which I currently have a light. It would be extremely difficult to get that light in the attic to see if it is supported from a ceiling fan. If I do I'll cut the drywall around the box to see and use a blanket, but before I do, I thought I would ask and see if anyone knew a way to say, without going into attic or cutting drywall.
